Company No: 3030641 Funding for UK groups working overseas SYFAB gives help and advice to local voluntary and community groups working with people in South Yorkshire. We don’t have the resources to work with groups whose main work benefits people overseas. This sheet lists useful books and contacts for projects working overseas. What do you need funding for? • With any funding application the first step is to establish your funding need. If there is more than one project you need to find funding for then work out which is the priority • Then do a careful costing, be specific in your application about the amount of money you need. You will need to carefully explore currency exchange rates and research local costs of materials and salaries. • Before you apply to any funder you should spend some time working on making your case to funders, collect information to support your case, put it down on paper to form the basis of your proposal. Funders of overseas projects will expect you to have detailed knowledge of the geographical area and its people. • Make sure you show that your group is well organised and ready to use the grant if you get it. New local groups may be able to get support and help for work overseas by working in partnership with a wellestablished charity (for instance, WaterAid) already working in a particular subject or area. It is also important to research other organisations working in your particular area for background material to include in your funding applications. Organisations might range from large well-known charities to small local churches undertaking work overseas. You can research relevant national organisations using The Voluntary Agencies Directory, National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), 2001, £25.00 The directory is arranged alphabetically, and has a subject index including sections on: • International Aid Organisations • Overseas Aid/Development • Poverty: Overseas • Peace Organisations NCVO can also give direct help and support to organisations with a national remit, working overseas. Their Voluntary Sector Helpdesk can refer enquiries to funding advisers for telephone advice about strategic planning and to broadly identify funders.
