Company No: 3030641 Funding for Arts Organisations What do you need funding for? • With any funding application the first step is to establish your funding need. If there is more than one project you need to find funding for, work out which is the priority. • Then do a careful costing, be specific in your application about the amount of money you need. • Before you apply to any funder you should spend some time working on making your case to funders, collect information to support your case, put it down on paper to form the basis of your proposal. • Make sure you show that your group is well organised and ready to use the grant if you get it. National Lottery Funding The National Lottery is probably the main funder of arts projects in South Yorkshire. Money is distributed through the following main schemes: Awards for All This is a small grants fund jointly run by several lottery distributors in England. It makes grants of between £500 - £5,000 to community and voluntary groups for arts, charities, sports or heritage activities. The Arts Council of England (ACE) The Arts Council is an independent organisation that promotes arts and cultural activities across the UK. Government and Lottery money is distributed through a number of programmes including: Grants for Individuals (£200-£30,000), Grants for Organisations (£200- £100,000) and Grants for National Touring (£5,000 - £200,000). Applications can be made for capital and revenue grants to fund costs for activities lasting up to three years. Other Lottery Funds available for the arts include those run by the Film Council and Youth Music. Other Key Funders of Arts Activity The Arts and Libraries or Leisure Services Department of your local Council may give grants to local arts projects. The Foundation for Sport and the Arts makes grants to many local groups from money provided by Football Pools operators. Arts & Business Yorkshire or A&B supports arts and business relationships through a number of schemes, including business volunteers and placements, training and sometimes cash awards. Charitable trusts – a number of trusts are interested in funding activities and work to do with the arts. The Bureau’s Information Service can provide details of charitable trusts interested in funding particular arts groups/activities e.g. those working with particular disadvantaged groups including, people disadvantaged by poverty and minority ethnic or disability groups. It is important that you look carefully at the policy of each funder, write individual letters to each and tailor your application accordingly. The Arts Funding Guide also lists charitable trusts with an interest in funding the arts.
