Issue 117 | June 2008 Case Study: This month we have a run down of some of the big Charitable Trusts in the UK... News: New Big Lottery Fund programmes now open for applications... Funding information for voluntary and community groups in South Yorkshire. Produced by SYFAB www.syfab.org.uk South Yorkshire Community Foundation: Meet the New Team 2007/8 saw a lot of changes for South Yorkshire Community Foundation: the last year of the Local Network Fund and Community Champions Fund; the first year of the Capacity Builders Fund; and setting up and running the ongoing Flood Disaster Relief Fund. Now that the Local Network and Community Champions Funds have finished, the Foundation has reorganised itself to meet the needs of grant recipients and donors. The Foundation’s twelve staff members are now working towards expanding the endowment funds already held by the Foundation (which contribute towards the Small Grants Fund), whilst tendering for delivery of a variety of other grant schemes that include Grassroots Grants, the Government’s new small grants scheme. More information about the Foundation’s new funds is due to be announced in early July 2008, and the Foundation encourages groups to get in touch for an update at that time. SYFAB will also continue to keep you updated on progress through Funding News and our website. This is probably a good time to let you know who to contact at the Foundation, and how to get hold of them: The Foundation now have three Fund Managers - Karen Alsop, Rachel Mellalieu and Sue Wragg. Their role is to assess all grant applications and identify the most appropriate funding stream(s) based upon the specific details of the project. Each Fund Manager is responsible for the management of a specific range of funds. A central part of the Fund Manager's role is to liaise with, and provide feedback to, the Foundation’s Donors (companies or individuals) regarding the projects that their contributions have funded and any other possible funding needs that arise throughout South Yorkshire. The Fund Managers also each oversee one of three Fair Share areas (Kimberworth Park, Monk Bretton and Stainforth) that the Foundation is responsible for as part of their administration of the Lottery’s Fair Share Programme - Theresa Jones is the Grant Co-ordinator for this scheme and oversees the administration and reporting elements of the fund. Karen Walke is the Outreach Worker whose task is to guide groups through the application process. This can range from telephone contact about a particular question or issue, a site visit to the group to support completion of their application form, or signposting on to other support agencies, as appropriate. Pauline Booth and Peggy Murton are the main people on the administration team who will answer any general queries about the status of a group’s application. The Foundation look forward to hearing from you and meeting with you in the coming year. Because of that, we don’t cover them in Funding News as often, because there isn’t anything ‘new’ to say. But trusts are a really valuable source of support to voluntary and community organisations. So this month, we have a run- down of some of the big charitable trusts. In Britain there are thousands of charitable trusts, grant-giving bodies set up by their founders to distribute money to good causes. Some of these trusts are very small, with only limited amounts of grants to allocate, often with a specific geographical area or area of interest. Some are large funders who will fund nationally, can allocate both larger and smaller grants, and often have a paid administrative team. These funders are a valuable source of income for many voluntary and community organisations. Due to their independent status, they are not subject to the whims of government policy and can allocate money as they wish. Also, some will fund groups for more than one year, which can really help with financial planning. Smaller groups can sometimes be worried about applying to large charitable trusts, but they are often very approachable with websites, offices and paid staff who can answer queries. Some of the biggest charitable trusts are outlined here. These funders give millions of pounds of grants each year. If you want more information on these trusts, or any others, you can contact the Information Service at SYFAB.
