Up to £2,500 is available for eligible businesses based in the region to assist with immediate recovery needs. Anybody trading as a business in a recognised flood area can apply, including charities and social enterprises. Funding can be used for: • Losses suffered as a result of the floods including repair, replacement, damaged property and other tangible assets including equipment, furniture and fixtures, debris removal and other clean up costs. Payment will be made for goods or services which have been purchased since the flooding to assist in the immediate recovery needs of the business, rather than for goods damaged in the floods. • Wage costs used for clearing flood damage. Claimants may use all or part of the £2,500 allocation to cover these wage costs, paid since the flooding. Application forms are available from the Yorkshire Forward website. Claims will be assessed and payment made within 14 days. The High Street Centre is based in Rawmarsh, Rotherham. It provides a meeting space for 39 groups, and office space. They also organise activities for young people, including ACTIVATE! and a range of training for local people. The organisation wanted funding to develop the Centre and improve the facilities so that more groups could access it. As part of the fundraising process the Centre requested several funding searches from SYFAB’s Information Service and support from the Rotherham Development Worker, Ian Paisley. By only applying to funders whose criteria fitted closely with the proposed projects, the organisation has been successful in raising most of the funding they needed, including grants from Garfield Weston Foundation, Trusthouse Charitable Foundation and WREN. They are now applying to the BIG Lottery Reaching Communities and Community Buildings programmes. What fundraising have you been doing? We have been applying for capital funding to re-develop the centre, and revenue funding for salaries and to develop the organisation. Some fundraising had been completed by the centre before - but I was a complete beginner. The board are involved in determining the projects that we are going to develop and fundraise for, but an administrator and myself do most of the form filling. I’ve prepared 50 applications since starting this role. I am still learning about successful fundraising but would suggest that good quality applications with supportive and colourful material that tie directly to the funder’s priorities are much more likely to be successful. Every application we send is tailored. It’s rather like applying for a job. We got some rejections but by being selective in who we applied to we tended to get a better success rate which made it less disheartening. I have been surprised by the amount of information we have found out by networking. For example, we needed a third party funder for our WREN application and after a lot of searching we found out that Rotherham MBC had some funding for this purpose. My advice would be to find other groups that do similar work to you and learn from them. Build up a strong network of contacts to help you stay informed. Tell us about the networking you do We are members of several networks in Rawmarsh and Parkgate, for example the Rawmarsh Youth Development Group which is for groups working with young people in the area including faith groups, Youth Service, Rawmarsh Community School, Rawmarsh and Parkgate Partnership and other interested parties. The group has been running for a couple of years but has been running in a new format for several months and now has its own constitution. We meet on a monthly basis here at the High Street Centre and update each other on the activities we are running and any other youth activities we know about in the area. Sometimes representatives from the Area Assembly come along to promote projects relevant to groups who work with young people. We also use the network as a way to tell people about other things like training for groups working with young people. One of the pieces of work we have completed is a Youth Development Plan that helps to avoid duplication across the area. As well as this group, we also attend the Area Assembly meeting, Rawmarsh and Parkgate Training Forum and other community based meetings. We are also members of the Young People’s Voluntary Sector Consortium. What support have you had with your fundraising? One of our Trustees introduced me to someone who had considerable experience of raising funds for another charity and he acted as a mentor who shared his experience in fundraising with us. One of the suggestions he made was improving the quality of the information we send with our applications. For example, we now have an Information Pack that has all the key details about the organisation: board members, bank details, history, our Business Plan and beneficiaries. This can be sent to accompany funding applications. We already had the information but in separate documents and different formats so it was just a matter of collating it and improving the design. It only took us a couple of days to do this. However, we do keep adding to the document: for example, we are just completing a website for the Centre, so we’ll include this. Putting them into one format pulled everything together and also helped us to see how much had been achieved. We tend to have a few extra copies available in the office for visitors, people interested in hiring rooms, people interested in joining the Board, and potential volunteers. The Information Team at SYFAB explain how the networking and mentoring examples above have contributed to the High Street Centre’s fundraising success: By attending the Rawmarsh Youth Development Group, the High Street Centre have managed to stay informed about all of the current youth activity and services in the area, and other services and local funding sources that could be useful. From a fundraising point of view, funders increasingly want to see evidence that you are thinking strategically about the services that are available in your area, that you are not duplicating other service provision, and that you are exploring opportunities for partnership work and closer working. Being part of the available networks in your area helps you stay informed. It can also mean that you get to hear about changes and issues that will affect your organisation, and give you an opportunity to do something about them. There are a lot of organisations out there who have a lot of fundraising knowledge and experience that they would be willing to share with new groups and people new to fundraising. Being involved in local networks helps you to make those useful contacts. For the High Street Centre, Caroline asked around the members of her management committee, and was able to find a contact who gave practical advice that improved their funding applications. The content for the Information Pack was all there and all Caroline had to do was bring it together. It is now acting as a really useful marketing/ fundraising tool for the Centre that will save them lots of time. For groups of any size, it is well worth thinking about the skills and knowledge of your management committee; what skills and personal/professional contacts do you have within your committee, and how can they be used to best support the organisation? And if you don’t have all the skills you need, how can you get them? Your local Council for Voluntary Service will be able to give you advice and support with developing your management committees.
