Our Development Workers

As well as providing information on sources of funding, the Bureau can also provide further assistance with fundraising through our Development Workers. We have one development worker based in each district: Rotherham and Sheffield. Unfortunately we don't have one for Barnsley or Doncaster at the moment. We can't guarantee that they can support every group, and because demand is greater some Sheffield groups may not be able to get assistance.

This project provides free advice, information and training about fundraising to voluntary and community groups in Barnsley. In particular we can:

  • help you improve your fundraising skills and identify your funding needs

  • help work out costs and draw up a budget for fundraising, and put together funding plans and strategies

  • give advice on how to make a funding application and who to apply to

  • provide information on local statutory sources of funding

  • refer you to our Information Service based in Sheffield for information on national and local charitable trusts and other non-Government funders, like the different National Lottery boards

  • provide training sessions and workshops on funding and related issues

  • offer a range of information sheets

  • put you on the mailing list for Funding News, our free monthly newsletter

What we don't do

We don't give out money, or undertake to do the fundraising for your group. Our aim is to give you the skills, confidence and information to do it yourself.

Who can use the service?

We prioritise work with groups who have difficulty fundraising. These include:

  • groups with no paid workers

  • groups in isolated urban or rural areas

  • groups that are not part of existing networks or forums

  • groups whose aim is to combat disadvantage, and those working with particularly disadvantaged communities or people, including ethnic minorities, disabled people, women, unemployed people and young people.

Sheffield Funding Advisory Service

How we can help groups

We provide a range of funding advice and support, designed especially for groups in Sheffield. These include:

  • Fundraising advice & support where we work directly with your group for a time limited period to help you identify potential funders, prepare funding applications and put together long term funding plans and strategies.

  • Funding advice surgeries where you can make one-off enquiries about fundraising strategies and funding applications.

  • Specialist workshops where you can develop your fundraising skills, including A Beginners Guide to Fundraising and DIY Guides to application forms.

  • Workshops designed specifically to meet the needs of your group.

Who can use the service?

The service is open to all voluntary and community groups in Sheffield. We particularly welcome contact from:

  • Groups with little fundraising expertise or experience.

  • Self help groups and organisations benefiting the welfare needs of disabled people and minority ethnic communities.

  • Groups that have never been successful in attracting funding from outside the Council.

  • Groups that are ready to develop their fundraising and have people able to dedicate time to the work.

Who we can't help

  • The service cannot provide support for groups planning large building projects.

  • The service cannot provide advice to people seeking individual sponsorship.

The work of the service is supported by a planning group that decides which groups the service will work with. Occasionally when demand is high we may have to limit the number of groups we work with at any one time.

The Sheffield Funding Advisory Service used to be called the Sheffield Funding Consultancy Project. We have changed the name to better reflect the broader range of services now on offer to groups in Sheffield.
